What is the percentage that ebay takes from the total amount these days? It feels like eBay keeps taking more and more each year! I'm sure it was 10% once

About 15 years ago it was 10% but sellers paid insertion fees. Now private sellers virtually never have to pay basic insertion fees but the FVFs are 12.8% of the total payment, that includes the postage element.

It used to be 10% to eBay and 2.9% plus 30p to PayPal.

Now it’s 12.8% plus 30p to eBay so slightly less than it used to be.

Many private sellers get offers every couple of weeks though.

The VAT issue catches a lot of people out, that’s why the business seller FVFs look better than private FVFs as they are not comparing like for like.

Good point, I always forget to add that bit!

Things change so much , when I first started there was no business/private seller distinction. All listings were paid for, MVL were charged per item not per listing, PayPal wasn’t a thing and you had to wait patiently for buyer to send a cheque, not knowing if they had sent it or not or how long to wait. Photos were chargeable , although I think you got one free, so I used to use photo bucket to embed my photos in the description to avoid the charges. Oh, and there was something called Turbolister which was a service you could use to save listings until you needed to list them as scheduling was also charged.

Then PayPal was introduced but it was up to sellers to decide whether to use it , then it became compulsory to offer it, now even PayPal has gone.

    What next I wonder?

No, the private seller fees include VAT.
Business fees are lower and have VAT added on top.

You charge the buyer for the postage though. I charge the buyer £3.30 postage and pay £2.99 to Royal Mail so no cost to me.
