Google storage limits

Hello Forum peeps.  First time posting - long term saving.
Over the past few weeks/months I've received warnings from google that I had exceeded my free storage limit of 15gb.  I removed a few photos and deleted some emails and that seemed to do the trick.  However, over the weekend Google stopped me from receiving and sending emails or backing up photos, again, as I had exceeded my storage limit.  I tried all kinds of things to get my data  below 15gb to no avail.  So I signed up fro the free month of Google One that auto renews at £1.79 pcm after the trial.  As soon as I had done that and downloaded the Google One app, my account showed as using only 11gb.  Where did the 4gb go?  I feel like I'v e been tricked.  Has anyone else had this and if so, what did you do about it.  I'm teemed to cancel the subscription but fear I'll then lose email and photo storage again.  I know I've been getting a free-good for years but I don't think this is fair.
PS - on the same day. I did haggle my broadband and mobile bill down by £17pcm so I am still up on accounts!

Could it be items in the bin?

I’ve emptied all bins so many times. It just seems more than a coincidence that after I sign up my data usage drops

You could try keeping Google but not paying for extra and putting some files instead on onedrive or dropbox. i keep docs/emails etc on Google but photos on OneDrive.

I had two free Google accounts, in best Money Saving ways, by using two different email addresses. As both got close to their limits, I bit the bullet and went for the 100GB at £15.99 per annum (having already had 3 months free through an offer). Backups of all my photos are now in one account.
I also use the Google VPN on my phone, as it's included at no extra cost.

I'm in this situation and considering taking the plunge with Google One, and perhaps even using the vpn.

Storage used to update 24hrs later a while ago, perhaps some parts of Google still work like this and some don't. I removed stuff from my drove and saw the quote drop, but I seem to recall deleting emails and pictures it updated the day after.
