I've just signed up for the Experian account they offered,  following the letter details and all I got was a basic free Experian membership.
I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything, there were no other options to try.
To get the Identity Plus there's a monthly charge.
The so called 'support' has me even more worried about their lack of competence.
I've emailed USS but I can see this being a bit of a long fight.
  • I agree that a one year subscription to Experian is not sufficient.
I saw that 250 people have signed up with Barings Law in Manchester in a class action suit. Does anyone know anything about the firm?

I have signed up with them as they seem a bit more professional than the others I looked at. Signing up is really easy as they have bespoke form form for the capita data breach. Not heard much from them since but it will be a long process I would have thought. I will post any updates/outcome on here though

I'm looking at Barings, as I was also affected, but I can't find information about what the potential costs are to me (e.g. if their claim is unsuccessful). What's everyone else found out?

EDIT: Update. I got most of the way through filling in the form to sign up, but at the very end, before submitting, you're given a PDF that sets out your potential liability for fees. Got scared, didn't submit!

I am also impacted by the data breach and worked for Capita before we were sold. Many of my colleagues are in the same boat.  A year of Experian Pro isn't sufficient.  I've already spent hours checking my credit references and you wouldn't believe how difficult it is to change your joint account number/sort.  My concern is that my bank details were included in the loss and it is simple to check that the account exists using my banking app and an incomplete payment.  With employment history, NI number, address and bank details - I reckon there's a good chance of someone else driving away that new Ferrari and leaving me with the bill!

Does anyone have examples where their employer is demanding compensation on behalf of their staff, it might help to encourage our new owners to act corporately or is this not something that an employer will do.  Capita still provide our pension service.
  • Barings don't get great recent google reviews - poor communication, wrong information about timescales given etc.  According to their long T&Cs document at the end of the signup process, they charge 35% + VAT = 42% if you win in court. They organise insurance to cover any costs if you lose - not sure if we have to pay for this.
  • Just got my notice from Capita with the free for a year Experian Identity Plus membership. Signed up. Locked. Got to remember to unlock it if applying for any credit in the future though as it will cause a problem if not...

Have seen people mentioning Barings Law. Yeahhh no. I believe they are just a No Win No Fee compensation chaser and will take a hefty percentage of your claim if you win (as is usual for these type of companies). Plus, agree with other comments that their Review Rating is poor.

Am looking elsewhere for assistance...not leaping before I have done my own due diligence.

    Worrying times.

  • thanks for all these comments and questions.  i too have signed up for the experian support and have the paper work from barings.  Reading the paper work it looks like there is a possibility you might be liable for some costs if they win - i.e. if the compensation doesn't cover their legal fees.    I don't know how likely that is.   Are there any legal buffs here who can give an opinion?
