Fence height

We are purchasing a house that sits on the corner of two roads although the fence line is set back a good 3 meters from the edge of the foot path with the land between belonging to highways.
I’ve just read the laws on fence height as below
I’ve just read the laws on fence height as below
*If your fence (typically the front garden fence)fronts a road, a footpath or public highway and is more than 1 metre high – then you need to apply for planning permission.
*If your fence does not front a road (usually the back garden), then the maximum height without planning permission is 2 metres, including any
I am unsure if this means we should have a 1 metre fence all the way round or if we are allowed to have a 2 meter fence.
Any one have an ideas?

A 2 metre fence would only be allowed, without PP, between other gardens. If the fence is an outer boundary, then 1 metre.2

I'm pretty sure this falls under PP requirements - can you not just ask the vendors if they applied for PP or get your solicitors to check if you are worried? Even if it falls foul of planning laws it shouldnt be a big deal to lower it.Worst debt £31,746

If the fence is currently 1m or less you would need planning permission to raise it above 1m (but not to plant a hedge...). If the fence is currently higher than that, and has been for more a while (I think it is 4 years - check old google streetview) then you can keep it, and I believe replace it at the same height.

Someone around the corner from me had his problem. They moved in, and put a 2m high fence all round the front garden up against the pavement ( god knows why ! ). The council came round and made them cut it down to 1m. The person then planted hedges instead that are now about 2m high ( but do look much nicer than a wooden fence )1
