Got my renewal letter yesterday.
Phoned them up to haggle.
Sadly they would not do a price match on Green Flag, but they did with AA.
So £251.99 becomes £168

It's always worth haggling with any company, perhaps even more so with insurance companies (breakdown cover is simply another insurance product).  But there are dozens of breakdown companies out there whose prices are way cheaper than either the AA or RAC, and who provide comparable levels of service.  It might be worth shopping around next year, you could save yourself a fair amount.
The fact that they knocked such a lot of your quote surely goes to show how over-priced it was in the first place?  Because it's a safe bet that they won't be planning to make a loss on the deal (yes, I know one can never predict the future when it comes to insurance, but hopefully you get what I mean).

...yes but I regularly read about how bad the RAC service actually is as they tend to rely more on contracting their service out to independants?....

So do AA? One out of the 3 times I used them they sent a contractor.

£168 sounds expensive, thats more than I pay for full car and caravan cover.  If my car or breaks down they will take me to the
campsite and then home again via a storage site if required.(even if we breakdown days before we travel)

All that above the standard breakdown cover with home start and onward travel etc. etc.

Just checked the RAC Arrival price and its less than your quoted price but still £30 more than I currently pay for the same cover.
Have you got european cover? Thats the only option I do not choose.

Sounds a lot to me when I pay circa £40 for a year's cover that includes home start, onward travel, overnight accommodation etc on a 16 year old car whereby I have had the need to call them out once, and they arrived quickly and got me on my way. Yes you've saved over RRP which is good - but you could save even more.

My renewal quote from the AA last month was £408! I paid £150 last year, for 2 company cars and business use cover so can't use some of the basic packages.

Got equivalent cover from RAC for £140 - would have been £50 if I didn't need the business cover.

    Why a result?

Sounds like you have still been fleeced. £168?

Dont  join the  RAC   Look  on  how  bad  the  RAC are   on  Facebook.   when  i  had to use  them in   febuary  this  year  at  Penzance   Cornwall  i  called  them  at 1pm   it  took  three  hours  for a patrol  to  get to me. and  the  recovery  truck  got  to me  81/2  hours  later.

I’d been with Driver Guardian for a few years, luckily only needed them to change a bulb in Ireland, but was then pointed in the direction of a Top Cashback offer for the AA - take the full package usually £200+ 😱😱 and with cashback it came down to around £85 which was more or less the renewal with DG. Decided to give AA a go, policy runs out in August. At their existing rates it won’t be renewed 😄
