Sodastream hack... is it workable?

We use our sodastream a lot and, even with the subscription plan, it costs around a tenner per refill.
I've seen hacks involving large CO² cylinders either directly linked to the machine or self refilling the originals, bringing the cost down to under £3; but has anyone here got any real world experiences re. practicality, upfront cost etc.?

Gas under pressure is dangerous - even non-flammable ones.  The bigger the cylinder, the greater the risks involved.

I'd advise against any kind of hack when it comes to pressurised gas, especially if only to save a few quid on fizzy drinks.

I refill my sodastream cylinders off my big CO2 cylinder all the time using an adapter. No drama at all.
The important trick is to put the sodastream cylinders in the freezer so that the CO2 stays liquid as it's transferred. Otherwise it's very straightforward. I would not call it a hack at all really, the adapters are solid pieces of brass and not going to explode or anything like that.

Perhaps "hack"is the wrong choice of word. It would be done properly with the correct fittings and, if it's to be believed, the saving is would be around £25 a month based on our usage
