We submitted the IHT400/421 and related forms by recorded delivery 4 weeks ago. I see that the delivery address is actually a Royal Mail sorting office in Wolverhampton? I understand the forms are then scanned to HMRC.
We have proof they were received at the sorting office but am wondering what sort of timescale we can expect to confirm if HMRC actually have them as have heard nothing yet. Cheers.

Any takers from folk who've been through this fairly common process ?0

There is no formal acknowledgement process from HMRC
From :
https://www.gov.uk/applying-for-probate/before-you-apply
"If there’s Inheritance Tax to payFill out and send form IHT400 and form IHT421 to HMRC and wait 20 working days before applying for probate"
A non-response from HMRC is your green light to apply for probate. Interestingly there doesn't seem to be the same instruction if "no tax to pay", but we waited anyway.
Regards and good luck with probate (19 weeks and counting)

Hi @ossie48.
We will be going through this process soon I think. My partner's mum died 6 weeks ago and at some point they will start the process of probate and selling the house. They haven't done anything so far. Any tips? I'm starting to get worried that nothing is being done and that it will become a big problem.1
