I have bought a house for £155k and noticed that the stamp duty charged was £1,750. Shouldn't this have been based on !% and been £1,550. Or is there some sort of tax on top?

Should only be £1550
SDLT is a tax. They can't add tax to tax (I don't think, lol!)

Probably stamp duty plus land registry fee.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks all, Just gone through all my paperwork and there is one document from the start where they got the purchase price wrong. It was down as £175 Obviously this must be where they worked out the stamp duty from but when pointed out that the document had an error they never changed the workings for the stamp duty.
To think that the swines could've just ripped me for £200. Just makes you realise that legal babble can blind you so much that you just put your complete trust in them and think they will get it right.TopCashback £1792.63My Little World0 -

Shouldn't have arisen from that. Your Solr should know what he paid out - and it is that he should have put on the SDLT return / computationIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Mm. The first documentation I got from there was a quote. On this quote it listed all the charges and showed the purchase price worng. I think that they have just been working from the wrong quotation.TopCashback £1792.63My Little World0

The point I'm making is that they exchanged for you in the correct sum ???? Therefore they knew what the price was - and that is what should have gone on the SDLT return. But as they've obviously got it wrong (despite having a later and correct figure ... than 'the first documentation') ..... then they should go back and correct it all the way through to HMRC - then refund you the imbalance. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Maybe the solicitor was looking for a Christmas bonus?
