Dear Martin Lewis, why are you not switching people on market tracker tariffs?

But at least the Octopus tariffs had and still have to a lesser extent a reasonable cap at £1, cf Texas $9 wholesale link.
I do wonder what the tracker price would have been during events like the Beast from the East and with excess snow nationwide and even more fall in South as that mixed with humidity brought in by Storm Emma in SW / Wales etc.
And it wasn't just UK - it impacted Southern and Central Europe - so possibly impacting energy import pricing too - with snow in Italy and French Riveira etc.
Daytime high temps of -11C in Scotland, -5 as far South as midlands here - and -3 at best - many had frozen pipes - loads lost gas boilers as condensor drain pipes froze overpowering gas service teams and plumbers alike - and very windy widespread.
Made worse towards end as 20in of Snow from Emma interaction reaked havoc on large parts of SW, SWales etc..
And if locked in for 2 weeks - Hartmut/ Beast from East lasted 11 days, Emma snow dump c48 hrs.
The Texas incident 9 days.
Both in part due to unstable / distorted flow of polar vortex - reaching further south than usual.

Yes low wind is a big issue - far too many greenwashing headlines re its benefits and highs - far too little focus on it's actual averages and especially it's lows - and so it's unreliability without mass and very expensive investment in storage etc.
The current cost of the cap - is now bringing a lot of these costs into sharp focus - in past the green levys, renewables grid connection and distribution etc..
For too long these were accepted as add ons to low overall energy prices.
It is also interesting to note that guaranteed CFD pricing - for old renewables at the moment (as much as 12p/kWh FOS wind in 2015 auction for short delivery) - has once again forecast as a cost add on.
Cfd cap component £10 - from last quarters rebate of -£54 - as gas prices drop.
Not sure the winter cold snaps this year anywhere near comparable with Feb Mar 2018 though. Or c2021 in Texas.0 -
