Bit of a tricky one - I have had a break in recently and I am awaiting the outcome of claim on my buildings insurance. I have sold my property and am awaiting exchange & property will be unoccupied because of the break in and the repair work needed - would I be able to take out a new policy with a new provider to cover me until exchange even though I am awaiting result of claim?

Yes - although it may get a bit fiddly with needing to declare the outstanding claim and then updating them on the outcome.1

The unoccupied status will be just as challenging as the ongoing claim. In other classes of insurance there is no issue at all in switching between insurers during a claim and whilst in principle the same applies to home in practice some insurers arent happy taking on a policyholder mid claim.1
