It works for me but I keep coming back to it's not simple, there is no "one fits all" solution so it's going to vary for every building & user according to their heating system, needs, schedule etc.

Good sensible answer, and I am not an “average household”. Theories abound but there is no answer to all problems, but it keeps everyone happy sounding out their solutions and hopefully will at least will each learn from the others.

I have a Drayton Wiser system.

In concept, on the first hand, think about throwing the room thermostat into the dustbin. Then, every iTRV will independently fire up the boiler belonging to the iTRV plus all radiators with a manual TRV.

Where all radiators (save for one safety radiator) have iTRVs then each radiator will independently fire up the boiler.

So a room thermostat would have no direct application in this set-up.

However, a room thermostat may be associated with one or a number of iTRVs and can control these related iTRVs. This helps to increase the degree of accuracy and allows the temperature measurement to be effected in the middle of a room rather than at the iTRV itself.
