Edf energy bill query

QUESTION - under the government scheme for energy my energy bill stated: HM goverment have introduced an energy price guarantee which reduces the amount you will be charged per unit of gas or electricity from 1st oct 22 for the duration of the government energy price guarantee applies. This reduction is applied to your bill automatically. You do not need to take any further action.

So EDF automatically reduced my 6 monthly bill by £400. (Fantastic)

By doing simple maths (and it is not my strong point) i worked out that after my credit, and what i paid i owed them £311.97, but they said i owed £711.97!!!
Which coincidently is exactly an extra £400!

(Bill states usgage that period £1072.97.
Balance on last bill In credit £95
Paid to us in credit £666
So 1072.97 minus 95 minus 666 equals 311.97!
Bill then states new balance 711.97 in debit)

I am assuming i am not meant to be paying back what the government took off! (And when i was on the phone to the customer service they assured me i wasnt paying that back!)

I ask as i am in the middle of writing a letter of complaint again!!

Answers greatly appreciated!😊

For most EDF customers the £400 rebate was paid back monthly over six months to your bank account.

Did they do that for you ?

Read ALL the pages of the bill.

If you paid by DD Edf did not not reduce the bill by £400 but paid this to your bank.

Have a look at your bank ststement.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

They did pay me the money into my bank account, and took the money off the bill making it £1072.
So im confused why i owed them the 400, because then i wouldnt have got the governnent scheme as i have paid it back!

They can't do both.. take 400 off the bill and give you the 400. One or the other is correct.

EDF did generate confusing statements by all accounts, but if they paid the £400 into your bank account AND took it off the bill, shouldn't the £400 go to EDF rather than you? Apparently it is explained in the statement details.
The government scheme wasn't intended to give individuals £400, it was designed to save them £400 off their utility bill. Unfortunately, suppliers weren't told how it should be applied to bills, so each did it their own way.

Look at page two of your bill, add up your energy usage yourself from the calculations, add the 5% VAT then take off what you have paid.
Once you’ve done this & realised your bill is correct, like several dozen other posters on this forum with the EXACT same query, tear up your complaint letter and put it in the bin
