Hi,
i set up a justgiving page to donate to a charity and on my donation ive added £5 gift aid when i shouldnt have! I can contact the charity and ask for a refund but because the donation has already been sent to them it would all have to be refunded in full and then for me to add my donation again at a later date ....without claiming gift aid! In order for the refund to be mandated justgiving need written confirmation from the charity that they'll be happy to refund it. I'm wondering if its worth bothering with or would i get into trouble over it?

Why shouldn't you have given gift aid?
Just let it go, if something comes back to bite you deal with it when it happens.0 -

But unlikely to be jail time involved for £5!

You don't usually give that £5, you tell the charity that they can reclaim it from HMRC.
Just contact the Charity and ask them how to retract a declaration, because you don't pay enough tax. Then it's their simple problem, to not include your donation on their next claimSignature removed for peace of mind1 -
I don't think this is a problem.
The Charity won't be making a specific claim for this donation - rather they will claim under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme which allows for all donations under £20 (whether or not there is a form) to be claimed in bulk. (subject to some rules - max £2000 a year etc)Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Dont sweat the small stuff.
I didn't realise I was still signed up for gift aid when I went from paid employment to an income below the tax threshold.
If the Inland Revenue send me a bill I will pay it of course.
Bet it would cost more to invoice you than to write it off.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Your £5 donation would cost you £1 in tax. HMRC are not going to send you a bill for £1.1
