No, it wouldn't be accepted. We do the short return in any case.

They are simply trying to save money... at the expense of other people's INconvenience. Shabby and inconsiderate practice. They want to sack staff and thereby save on salaries while frothing at the mouth to bring in AI.

I did believe that one could still opt into paper returns.  But it seems that HMRC are making it very difficult.  I wrote to them on 10 April requesting a paper return.  No response.  I tried phoning on the number that they listed for requesting a paper form.  There is just a pre-recorded message saying that they are not taking calls for paper returns.  I wrote to them again on 2 June, repeating request for paper return.  No response.  Considering now making a complaint.  Anyone else in similar position?

The orderline number is 0300 200 3610 - its working as normal so i'm not sure why you received that message. If you try again, you just have to hold on to the very end and it will connect you to an adviser.

I’ve eventually received a reply from HMRC, enclosing paper return form.  In case anyone else is in same boat, the form I received is exactly the same as the SA100 on this web page - which is labelled ‘for reference only’.
