in Cutting tax
For years (25 plus) OH and I have been filling in and returning paper tax forms, for a long time now the SA200 short forms. Suddenly and out of the blue, I have received a letter saying I MUST fill in an online declaration... whereas OH has received the SA 200 as usual. We always fill our forms together as our situations are near identical.
Is this a legally enforceable instruction or have I the right to request the usual paper forms, does anyone know? I am getting sick to death of the nerds (and penny pinchers) taking over.

It does seem odd that someone who can use on online forum like this is averse to filing a tax return online
Personal choice?

Could be age related though.

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

We have income from property letting. It's almost entirely for this reason that we've had to self-assess for the last God-knows-how-many years.0 -

Only fill in the short tax return (SA200) if HMRC sends it to you. You cannot download it, but you can read the guidance notes.

I have been trying to get a paper tax return to no avail. I am one year short of the 70 year age line for continuing to get a paper return sent automatically. I am retired but have been doing small bits of self employed work when requested by former commissioners, and because of this a self-assessment return is necessary. This may be the last year that I do this work, so I am reluctant to start filing online, when I know what I am doing with the paper return. I've been doing paper returns for 30+ years, so not inclined to change for just one more year. There is also the principle of choice. I feel that HMRC are railroading me into doing things the way that suits them, not the way it suits me.I did believe that one could still opt into paper returns. But it seems that HMRC are making it very difficult. I wrote to them on 10 April requesting a paper return. No response. I tried phoning on the number that they listed for requesting a paper form. There is just a pre-recorded message saying that they are not taking calls for paper returns. I wrote to them again on 2 June, repeating request for paper return. No response. Considering now making a complaint. Anyone else in similar position?0
