8 Windows including a Bay in Scotland

Hi,
I got a guy to the door the other day and mentioned something about Scottish government doing discounts etc. on ten year old windows in order to improve energy efficiency. I realise now that is all a load of bumph but thought I would see if the quote is completely out there.

We are replacing 5 normal windows with latches. One very wide window and then one bay window with one wide window and 2 side ones. Pvc windows, no colour, we wanted relatively decent replacement windows so not the cheapest possible, the total quote was 8400, with the option to maybe add a colouring later.

Firstly just to confirm the government help bit is total rhubarb?
And is that a very high quote?

Gareth

Should also add the surround for the windows will be wood which will affect price.

The Scottish govt. bit is junk. For what is available  https://www.homeenergyscotland.org/funding/

Get at least 3 quotes - ideally from well-regarded local installers.

Less than 5k fitted inc and certass / fensa regd
  • Get all the information from the guy at your door re "discounts etc" in writing.

    Then get several proper quotes

Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

Certass/FENSA will be very rare in Scotland - not a requirement here.

If this was a door knocker, you can be sure that the "quote" will include commission for multiple people in the chain. None of whom are adding any value to your windows. Go local, and go for an independent. You'll find their prices much cheaper and reflect the true cost of the job without the overheads of door knockers and BS sales pitches.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Not really, the few (for either you can probably count on the fingers of 1 hand the no. in the country) that are Certass/FENSA are likely to be companies with comission-based salesman or actual window manufacturers e.g. Velux/Weatherseal rather than local installers.
