If you're buying branded stuff from the likes of Victoria Plumb etc, you're probably fine. The cheap unbranded or own brand stuff they sell shouldn't be touched though. If / when things go wrong 5 in a few years, you'll struggle to get spare parts for unbranded taps etc. You'll find with good branded stuff that you'll be able to pick up spares for many years quite easily.

As for Victora Plumb just sending out replacements with no quibble and telling you to keep the faulty items - they can afford to do this as they are making such a massive profit on the items due to them being so cheaply made. Decent manufacturers mostly only send replacement parts as their items are better made so it isn't viable to replace a full item.

I always source my own bits as like you say, it's usually cheaper than getting from the local merchants. However, you may find your bathroom fitter may be less willing to help if something goes wrong and they haven't supplied the items
The last paragraph - the vanity unit for example is £805 in the brochure (from a decent manufacturer) which I would have added to my list to give to the fitter for him to then get everything (however he goes about that I don't know) and that's what I would have paid. However now I've seen it for half the price online (still the same manufacturer with same guarantee etc) so obviously I'm going to order it myself and save that cost?

I anticipate I'll be giving him the list of some things, but the more I find online, the shorter the list is getting. I'd rather he got everything based on the list I've given him but when the savings are that much it would be silly to pay the price in the brochure.

you can even tell him you are happy for him to add some markup to cover collecting/sourcing etc and for providing a warranty, but just not maybe £400 for a vanity lol
