Unexpected charges from Harlands.

Hi,

This is my first time posting so apologies in advance if I get things wrong.

I recently signed up to JD gyms in the North East in an effort to help lose some weight. The day after I signed up I received an email from a group called Harlands saying they had tried to take £19.99 from my account as per the DD but it had failed so they have added a £20 charge and will take £39.99 in the coming days. They say they are acting on behalf of "active nation".

Luckily that account didn't have the funds in - due to the way me and the missus budget and allocate funds per accounts - so they payments haven't been taken.

I have no idea who active nation are and when I googled it, they are based in the North West and further south. The closest branches to me are in Preston and Lincoln. I presumed it was a scam and ignored it.

I have since received another email last night saying the £39.99 payment was not received and ANOTHER £20 charge will be added so that I now owe £59.99.

I have looked up Harlands and a lot of places have said do not contact them due to their reputation but I don't want this to escalate and have a negative impact on an already poor credit rating.

What can/should I do to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

  • As a quick edit: I have checked my account and my payment to JD Gyms has been made on the day I signed up and is separate from the Harlands request.

I also don't have any knowledge of a bounced DD from my bank.

Contact them to find out what it's about. May be an incorrect email address, an admin error or an account you've forgotten about.

No, I've also checked reference numbers and nothing coincides with anything I have from either bank or JD gym

Harlands is the payment processor for JD Gyms.

I suggest they were trying to take your monthly membership fee

You should sort this out with Harlands, they are the payment processor for various gyms.

If no DD is in place to them its obviously an error of some kind.

These emails are computer generated, so don`t read too much into them, but it is an issue you need to address.

  • UPDATE:

I rang Harlands and spoke to a lovely lass on the phone, explained the above and shes told me it's an account that has been active for some months in Runcorn (?sp) but the few details I was prepared to give (last 3 of phone and bank account number) didn't match with what they have.

She was a geordie too so I told her the area I live in and she's added a note to the file and removed my email address from it.

    Fingers crossed its all sorted!
