ILoveFilm Free DVD rip off?

I subscribed to an online dvd rental service for a free trial period. Before this period ended I cancelled my subscription and left the country for about a month.
My problem is that after I cancelled my subscription they sent me 3 DVDs, without letting me know about it (when they post a DVD they sent an email informing the user about it - but now they didn't!)! While I was away I received emails from them saying that I must return the DVDs. I replied and asked which DVDs have they been talking about but I received no answer from them!
After more than 3 weeks I finally got to get an answer from them saying that they had sent me the DVDs (that I didn't ask for) without informing me and I should return to them. I replied that I will return them as soon as I return to the country and so I did.
Their response was that I had to pay for one month subscription, which was passed to a debt recovery service and I should pay to them the subscription plus some extra charge! I tried to contact them and explain the situation but they are just not willing to talk! This is obviously not my fault but what are my options now? What can I do to protect myself from them?
Kind Regards

Put the full details in a letter and send it recorded delivery to their Managing Director and ask him to sort out the problem.
Keep a copy of all the emails that you have sent to them and received from them and the details of when you cancelled your subscription. It wouldn't do any harm sending a copy of your cancellation to the MD.
If you receive any demands from a debt collection firm send them copies of all the correspondence.
Hope this helps.

Hi
This seems to be their trend
I had the same problem. I posted the 6th dvd before the expiry period and called them next day to cancel (3 more days were left for free trial to expire).
I was told that 3 more dvds were posted. I was shocked. They 'graciously' extended the free trial for another 4 days so that I can post back. But the DVDs were not received on time for me to post back. When there was just one day left for free trial Is till did not have the DVD in hand. If they had posted on 29th of December, when I called to cancel, I should have received it by 3rd. I sent an email to them stating the status but they refused to extend the date further. I am supposed to pay 15£ now for none of my mistake
The call goes to India and the employees are well prepared for this situation. They keep saying the samething repeatedly. This shows that it is their regular trend.
I am furious... It is a shame that companies rip off our money like thiis. I would strongly recommend people to keep off iLovefilm!!!!0 -
iv got some voucers to use has anyone had a successful "trial period"?Quidco =£446 march 090

dont bother using them
its a farce.
i had to keep paying a sub, due to dvd's 'lost in the post' it can take up to 3 months to sort out because, when you report lost dvd's you have to wait for royal mail to issue you with a letter to sign, but this is not sent out for 3 months to 'allow them to find it!'
its either wait for the letter to sign or pay £20 per lost dvd!!!!!!
i waited 3 months for the letter and had to pay £9.99 pm until they recieved it back signed.

Thanks for the tips I'm looking into signing up to a DVD rental service again. I've used Amazon's twice before - had no problems with. Might go back to them and give ilovefilm a miss. This week I'm mostly listening to: Ed Harcourt0

Did they post the DVDs to you after your contract ended, or where they already in the post? Im no expert but If they sent them after I wouldn't have thought you were legally responsible for returning them. They should be thankful they got them back at all!0

DO NOT USE THEM!!!
It is such a con, they promise you free movie tickets if you subscribe and given you only need to pay £10 a month it looks worth it, three months later I still havn't recieved any tickets and they keep stalling, the movies take ages to come and when you try to take a payment holiday they then tell you that you still have to pay. All the call centres are in India too.
I hope the company goes down the plughole asap! Go with Amazon.0 -

I use lovefilm.com i had a free trial but really liked the service they provide so signed up for the £7.99 a month option, its a great deal and much easier to use than trawl the streets looking for a Blockbuster, which seem to be extinct these days!
Good luck in sorting this out"He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money." Benjamin Franklin0
