I have just received an SMS text message from Virgin Money that reads as follows.

Hi, You have a new statement available. To view, download or print it, go to 'secure messages' in online banking. We couldn't reach you by email so please check that we have an up-to-date email address. You can do this in the app under 'more', 'preferences' and then 'contact'.

I have a number of comments on this.

  1. I guess that they tried to email me and got a response that indicated an invalid email address. I have no idea why as I have had the same email address for almost 25 years. Certainly since I opened my Virgin Money current account three years ago.
  2. There is no 'more', 'preferences' and 'contact' anywhere on the app. I can though click on the icon for "My Profile" and "Change you contact details" and see all of my contact details.
  3. On my contact details it has my correct email address, so there is nothing to correct.
Also, I got an email in December advising me that the interest rate on my M Plus saver interest rate had increased, hence they do have my correct email address..

My question is whether anyone else has received a similar message.

My personal feeling is that Virgin Money are known for being rather sloppy and this is all it is. I have no reason to think that it is anything more sinister, but would like the views of others.

I often get letters and texts from Virgin money saying they have tried to contact me by email but have been unable to contact me. But they have my email and haven't sent me any emails - I even check my spam.

    Its just bizarre!

Something in Virgin's messages may be triggering spam filters. Ianmanc's mention of BT addresses is a clue, I run a mailing list and messages to BT addresses almost always bounce back
