can anyone tell me what im doing wrong:(made pastry twice today, both times its gone straight in the bin,as it crumpled up and would not go together.i made it with 8oz of plain flour,2oz of trex and 2oz of butter, with 4 tbsp of cold water.any advice please:)
I use asda best for baking butter just 55p, I sift the flour and use a wire egg slicer from poundland to cut the butter into manageable sizes, then put the lot into the mixer using the beat bars, get great breadcrumb effect, tehn change to the dough hooks and add the water if necessary after a short time, bag it and into the fridge for an hour :cool:0 -

Did you over work it? Did you rest it in the fridge before rolling?
I made pastry by hand today (don't trust machines) using T value lard & butter and it came out lovely. I've never been fond of Trex as it's quite a soft fat.
ETA: sorry, I'd started my reply before anyone else had replied then got distracted before hitting send“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

I always put the water, the bowl and the kenwood beater in the freezer for at least 15 mins before I make pastry.
I always rest it in the fridge before using.
Before I discovered this I had lots of chewy pretty disgusting pies0 -
i might have overworked it:cool:and put it in the fridge to rest.i wont be trying it with trex again, cant bear the thought it got wasted:cool:
I made a similar mistake the other week by using gluten free flour and couldn't figure out why it just crumbled as I tried to roll it out :rotfl:
That ended up being binned. Hate waste too“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

there are lots of methods, but i do remember delia doing the lard and butter recipe, and tbh her recipes are normally foolproof:DBefore you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0 -
I grate my butter/fats into the flour, then rub it in with fingertips to avoid overworking it. I find it makes a huge difference, and avoids crumbling.
Hope this tip helps, even if it was the Trex xWe spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
