I'm just commenting here so I can follow this thread...always looking for free things to do in our grand and very expensive capital city.

If you are on Instagram you could follow accounts like wondersoflondon. loulouexplores and thecuriouspixie who do short videos of things and places to see.

Like the last remaining gas lamp run on sewer gas. I know! Amazing, eh?!
I follow a few London instagrammers. Thanks.
  • National gallery and the Wallace collection are both free and both house superb collections.  You kind of need to like paintings though.

I've been to both as I like art. I like the Wellcome Collection too which I go to now and again as I like their new exhibitions.
  • Went to the Garden Museum the other day which was quite small and overpriced at £14 for entry. I nearly asked for a refund, but thought not as I'm sure they don't get much in the way of funding. After that, I went to Regent's Park to see the summer flowers and rose garden which were lovely. I visit the park at least twice a year as I enjoy gardening. (Yes, I've been to Kew, but that was just like any other botanical gardens I've been to before.)
  • The John soames museum is free and really quirky.

Booking the Christmas carol service at the church in the tower of London is really nice, you get let inside the castle when the tourists have all left. Feels very medieval and Christmassy.

There are quite a few hotels with rooftop bars open to the public that have amazing views and you can pop in for a coffee.

I think the Leonardo at tower hill? Check as hotels change hands often

The Thames is tidal up to teddington and noone can stop you launching a kayak and going on your own river tour. Please don't do this it's extremely dangerous the tides are lethal and often deadly.
  • Often there are exhibitions on for certain dates so stay up to date by checking online. There are plenty of places you can go to free of charge.

Two places that have recently reopened after major works and would be worth a revisit are Young V&A (formerly the Museum of Childhood) at Bethnal Green
    and the National Portrait Gallery
