In the Headlines today-"Parents successfully appeal against £1,383 High Income Child Benefit Charge"

Will anyone be calling HMRC to see about getting theirs back too? I recently paid a similar amount, which has left me very tight!

Or not worth even trying?

Are your circumstances the exact same as the individual in that story?

I suspect HMRC will want to appeal the tribunal decision.

Although it's not a complete success, only a partial one, all the same it's a rather bizarre ruling.
To sum up, Because they were not specifically told or written to, they where unaware of the law (hmm, where have I heard that before?) and the judge thought, in this case at least, that ignorance of the law is a valid defence,
I would be amazed if HMRC don't appeal the decision.

I suspect that as this was a tribunal the judge wanted to make a deliberately strange ruling so that it will almost certainly be appealed to a higher court by HMRC.
That way the higher court can then put it on record that 'ignorance is no defence' in such HMRC/Child Benefit cases, just as ignorance is no defence in DWP benefit cases.

Hmmm, so how are people (like me) supposed to plan for such things, if no-one tells them.
Im not sure if you know too much about the HIBC... and how unfair it is!

    Yes, very similar.

The HIBC really is a mess, and overdue transformation. Martin spoke about it on GMB this week
