     Investments returns have always been uncertain and always will be, but in the long run they are the only game in town to beat inflation.( hopefully) 
    That may be true for the past 15 years since the financial crisis, but historically interest rates have been higher than inflation for most of the time.

    Yes there have been periods where interest rates were higher than inflation, but not by much.

    Whilst long term investing has beaten inflation by a lot more.
