You have not mentioned at all if the start reading Bulb used is the same as the final reading Shell is using.

You see it often that meter readings different from the "real" readings are used furing a switch, they will not use the readings you supply to the new company, but it will be checked by a third party organisation and the reading  they come up with should be used by both parties.

As long as both suppliers use the same reading it does not really matter if the reading is very wrong if there is no big unit price difference.

What you pay more at Shell, you will have paid less at Bulb.

Its under investgiation now and its been a week since i last heard anything.  I know its my !!!!!! up and i accept that and i'm more than happy to pay for the energy i used but i think £566 for 18 days usage due to a meter read error is abit too much really but i'll pursue it and see where we end up either way.
What you have to consider is that as well as you not providing an opening reading when you moved in, its possible the previous occupier didn't provide a closing reading when they moved out, so pay close attention to the dates they are trying to bill you for, as it's unlikely even estimated readings would come up with £566 for less than 3 weeks. All Shell will be interested in is getting paid for a period when they have no payment, regardless of who occupied the house, or indeed if anyone occupied it.

i tried to get the final meter read from Shell for previous ocupiers plus our opening meter and our closing meter reads for British Gas so they could work out our opening meter read with them but Shell wouldn't provide us with any information whilst they are conducting their internal invertigations.

i believe they are just going off the estimated bill from British Gas. it states on our letter from 30th Oct - 18th Nov which we are liable for. I can remember the old owner coming back on the Monday after to get the meter readings (it was an accoutant as the old resident died and left his estate to his accounts to disburse) as i remember saying to the Mrs that we have had free energy usage for the weekend in jest ... how wrong was !!!!
