After reading this thread, and this weeks MSE email, I'm slightly confused with the Octopus Flux scheme. Do you need a battery to be eligible for the Flux tariffs?  The MSE email states "It's also only available for PV systems with a battery."
I did wonder that but realistically how would they figure it out?

Though if you've signed up for Octopus tracker (if you can get it) that's probably better than flux if you don't have batteries

The other option is ofc agile which is what tracker is broadly based on. I still use Octopus tracker over flux however. I will switch to flux once I double my panels and triple my storage which should be in the next two or three months
What export options would be available with tracker? Standard 4.1p SEG? I guess it depends on your usage/export profile.

If you export significantly more than you pay for, potentially Flux would be better
You can export using either Octopus agile, which has agile octopus rates or 15p/kWh

When you sign up it asks you to pick 'the nearest' setup to yours from a list, which includes PV+Battery, a wind turbine, and something else I forget, but it never explicitly says you have to have one, and in the T&C the only mention of batteries is "Octopus Flux is designed for customers who have a photovoltaic (PV) solar system and a home battery installed and operational at the property which we supply."

I initially ignored flux as I don't have a battery, but after downloading my last 6 months of smart meter data and running my 1/2 hourly consumption against the flux rates, and seeing I would be better off*, I just switched.

*November-Jan would have been a little more expensive on Flux, but only £3-£4/m and we weren't even attempting to avoid the evening peak back then.

That's pretty decent. I guess the summer months is probably best for flux even if you don't have a battery. Other than that, tracker sound be better IF you're able to get onto that tariff
  • Flux is working for me:

I could make more if I allowed my Powerwall 2 to export.

I know some people forcibly export but I don't see the point because it means more battery cycles

I kind of see your point. I tend to force discharge down to around 60% at 1600, leaving enough in the battery to see me through to 0200 when I do a small charge. That in turn gets me through to generation starting properly at 10 o'clock or whenever. I'm not sure I'm adding any cycles really, just making the cycles deeper than they would have been. I just hope the battery sees it the same way.

I do similar. -£99.55 for April. Don't bother with forced discharge.

  • A little late to the party here but interested to see this topic as I'm considering the best option for our house...

I see some people have mentioned charging to 100% between 2-5am on Flux - I read somewhere else that it might be better to set to charge to 100% between 2am-4pm because that way you limit the max battery cycles to 1 (instead of 2) which should lead to better battery life, plus it ensures you're max battery right before the max export rates kick in at 4pm. What are people's thoughts?

Also interested to hear that Flux may not be the best tariff outside of the hot months. We don't own an EV, so don't have access to Go or Intelligent Octopus... so is there a better option than Flux in the lower PV months? Agile for example? Or perhaps even the basic Flexible octopus eco 7 tariff?

Thanks for any comments you're able to give :)

As Flux is new, I think most of us will have to wait until later in the year to see what options are available for non EV folks.

Octopus must realise that Flux is not good for winter so, rather than have everyone jump to another tariff, I'm hoping they'll offer some kind of adjustment to the rates for the less sunny months, maybe a second cheaper rate import slot say 1-4pm.
