Projector for home

Afternoon folks,

I wondered if you could help me?

We have had a garage converted into a space for our teenagers to essentially, doss about in with their friends.

I am looking at getting a projector so they can watch movies but I am definitely not techie and have no idea what I should be looking at.

I ideally want:

- Ceiling mounted
- Able to connect to wifi / stream off a phone (thinking Netflix etc?)
- As MSE as possible

Can anyone advise ?

Thanks!

There are cheaper options but we went for something middle of the road….ViewSonic PX701HD. Picture quality is excellent.

We’ve paired ours up with a chromecast which is probably the simplest way to stream on it. You’ll also want separate audio of some description rather than relying on built in speakers. I’ve linked ours up to a mini amp and ceiling speakers but obviously there a simpler options. Ours is in our master bedroom so I just wanted no visible wires etc and this allowed me to put the amp and wiring in the loft space above. Finally we got a decent screen but again not essential.

Our complete setup was around a grand so not sure what budget you were thinking of. If you wanted cheaper I’d probably just look on Amazon, connect to a chromecast as above and hook up with some form of sound bar. The kids love watching stuff on ours
  • For a grand I would just get the largest screen tv in the budget and wall mount it.
More useful and a better picture.

For a converted garage and an area where presumably you can’t easily access the void above I’d be inclined to agree. Also need to think about reinforcing that area of ceiling to mount it unless you alter the position to hit a joist, plus the room needs to be dark obviously.

Desktop one might be a better option if you do really want a projector.

Whats your budget? Does that inc the screen or have you separate monies for that? What level of lighting in the room do you want the projector usable with? Home Cinema projectors tend to be dark whereas business ones are brighter but handle motion poorly.

Your idea however is unlikely to work... if you want to stream to a projector that is above and probably behind you where do you think the sound is going to come from? Most projectors dont have any form of speakers and so you need a sound solution or accept a really odd effect of seeing the person talking in front of you but hearing it from behind you.

If you go for a UST projector that sits on a table/stand directly beneath the screen then more of these do have sound capabilities because they are being placed in the right location to be able to do this.

My setup isnt MSE but it has the amp with the speakers at the front (speakers elsewhere too) and then a long HDMI cable from the amp to the projector thats ceiling mounted and behind the sofa

Sorry for the delay in replaying, and thank you for your replies.

I think we are going to have to go with the TV option with a chromecast and some speakers. I was hoping we would be able to make it like a cinema room but OH isnt so sure now!

    thanks anyway!
