Mobility scheme

Hi all
my son’s DLA claim is up for renewal and I was wondering if it would be worth going down the mobility scheme route. I currently use my own car to get him about but also for work.

I know you can add business insurance on an individual bases but wondered if anyone knew what things were allowed and what definitely aren’t? I don’t really want to keep two cars running or have to go home and swap cars each time I switch from taking him somewhere to working as I’m already pretty stretched trying to work around taking him to all his appointments.
I am a social worker so drive between visits and also take children in my car occasionally .
thanks
thanks

I have heard stories where others have had a motability vehicle for their child and used it for work purposes. However, you'll be better off ringing them to ask this question and then you'll know for certain whether they will allow it or not. You need high rate mobility DLA award, with at least 12 months remaining on the award to be able to use the scheme.https://www.motability.org.uk/contact-us/

You’d also need to check the insurance as well. I think their standard insurance covers commuting rather than business, so that wouldn’t include your travelling between clients as a social worker. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
We looked into this and it seems a minefield if the driver wants to use the car for commuting or for during their work, it’s three years ago we researched so could be different now so definitely agree contact mobility operations for support, at the time we were told we could potentially buy extra insurance for him to use the car to commute but not to use the car as part of his job without more checks, their website said only for the disabled persons benefit.
I know have seen comments about adult applicants being allowed to insure for their job /commute no problem but definitely get official permission as the car would normally be for your son’s benefit/use. I believe mobility operations still have a Facebook page as well as the helplines mentioned above.Life throws you curve balls and kicks you in the teeth… learning to live with weird neurological complications and spine injury and hating fall.1 -
Thanks all I’ll give them a call

Remember that a Motability vehicle is leased from Motability and funded by the claimants mobility element of their DLA/PIP award, so if you do get a Motability vehicle then your sons payments would reduce.ie. Your son would be funding your work vehicle. You might instead consider leasing a vehicle yourself, and taking a contribution yourself towards the cost of that lease from your sons payments.
That way you can then use the vehicle as you like/need and the Motabiliy scheme rules do not apply.
You'll need to check around a few companies how much a lease would be if you are going to be using the vehicle for work.1
