Dents in skirting on stairs?

Doing some decorating and the stair case is really dinged up, don't want to just paint over it. I've given it a sand with my orbital to toughen the surface ready for priming but there is a decorative trim as well, and some deeper dents as shown in the pic. Is this a job for standard filler? Or use Wood filler? Any tips on how to deal with the curved part? Just run a finger and then sponge smooth maybe?

I sanded it down and used pre mixed Tetron filler. It's easier to stick than the stuff you mix yourself. Can even be molded and tends not to shrink when dry.
Lightly brushed with a fine damp brush.
When dry fine sanding.
I did a whole arcitrave and door which some animal chewed in desperation, skirting and twiddly bits once I got started
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

The majority of that to me looks like dents within the layers paint rather than the wood. An actual strip back to wood would probably show most of it is smooth.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0

I tried Wickes wood filler as has some laid around but it was useless, so used some knaupf filler and it's done the job.0
