HSBC Bank Account

Options
Hi all,

My partner and I have applied to open a basic HSBC bank account. We completed the online form and sent our documents via HooYu.

10 days have passed and we’ve not heard a peep. Is this normal timescales these days? We both have great credit so there will be no issue but I’m just confused as to how long it takes to open a simple bank account.

HSBC are known to be slow at communicating, and at times not even communicating at all. I'd probably give it a few more days before trying to contact them.

Do you mean 'Basic' bank account ?  That's a specific type of current account, for those with bad credit and other difficult circumstances, which I believe is only available via a branch visit.
The standard, everyday, 'HSBC bank account' can be applied for online.  Given you've been referred to HooYou, that implies they have difficulty with verifying your details electronically via Credit Reference Agencies.  So have you checked your CRA records for accuracy and completenesss ?

If it's been more than two weeks, give them a chase.

I mean an Everyday account, not a bad credit basic account. HooYu is a standard verification these days so I expected that.

We’ve recently completed on another mortgage so no issues verifying with Credit Reference Agencies.

I’ll give it a few more days and give them a call.

    Thanks

It took them just over a month to fully set up my first HSBC current account. When I opened my second account with them they were considerably quicker though.

One thing I will say is that if you have to pay extra to make phone calls to non-freephone numbers it would be best to phone them on their voice id setup line and just type a load of random numbers into the phone pad when it asks for sort code/account number (which you won't have at present). This will result in you being passed through to their main customer service centre and thus enabling you to call them for free.

When first setting up my child’s HSBC MyMoney years ago, it was setup instantly with ID in-branch and we were given the account details and access to the mobile app/internet banking immediately.

More recently for adult current account, Virgin Money took about 5 days for both the current and saver, Nationwide was around 7 days as a new customer. first direct around 10 years ago or so if I remember correctly took around 7 days too. I’d give it a little longer and if you haven’t for anything, get in touch and ask for an update to check there isn’t any issues.
