Fair do's - there's no room there!Where do these pipes go? Any way to trace where the return from the CH joins the other return?Anyhoo, you ain't going to save any money
Almost certainly whichever boiler you go for, the installer will have to clean your system and fit a filter in order to conform with the warranty requirements, so I'd personally let them worry about this.

Good point - thanks for your help
The pipes go up into the ceiling, under a bedroom floorboards and emerge at the airing cupboard.1 -
Is it really worth the hassle of installing a magnet cleaner on a system like that? the boiler looks old, it's already going to be gunked up and probably won't last much longer. the point of the magnet cleaner is to keep the system clean to prolong the life of a new boiler, it's not going to clean it.
personally I'd save the cash and just worry about it when you need a new boiler1 -
When the new boiler is installed, the installer will probably want to use the existing flue hole if it is suitable. That will lower the boiler height and maybe enough room above the boiler to fit a magnetic filter
