Virgin Media Delays - Have given up, how do I go about getting the compensation

I was originally meant to have Virgin installed on 1st Feb - Broadband, TV and phone
It has been delayed every 2 weeks or so since with latest date now 15th May.
I have decided to give up and have organised alternative broadband which should go active next week.
How would I go about cancelling Virgins install officially and obtaining the now +£500 in compensation due?
I don't want to just leave it on the basis that will continue to accrue compensation as I am concerned that it will get messy if I let them install it then cancel as i've read about them not acknowledging cancelations etc

Surely if you cancel the install you won't be in line for any compo. ? That would only be paid if the install actually happened at the later date.0

I think the wording of the compensation guidelines suggest if I cancel before the install I should be due it to that date from the original install date. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how they did it - letter, email, phone etc
If this isn't the case you would basically be expected to wait indefinitely for them to install it.
Some have said just wait then cancel as soon as its installed to maximise the compo but i find the customer service so appalling id rather just take whats due now and move on.0 -
