Old Gas meter calculation
My gas Meter was installed in 1998, it gives the units as F3. My supplier reads this as 100s F3 before calculating units x 2.83 etc.
Is this correct? I have read online that my meter should say 100s on it if using 2.83 for the calculation.
I live on my own, am as economical as possible with my usage and still find my bills much higher than those of my children and their families.
Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the forum.Your meter records cubic feet but for simplicity the readings are given as hundreds of cubic feet by ignoring everything in red on the meter. It's an industry standard.Think of it as if it showed the cost in pennies; it would be much easier to keep it simple by ignoring the last two digits and doing the sums as whole pounds. You're not being charged 100 times the correct amount.2

Could you give us the meter reading info from your meter please - what letters A,C, E S or Our Read or Your read are against those readings.
If they are all E's then your supplier will be guessing.
Are you able to read the meter yourself?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Thank you so much for replying Gerry, you have put my mind at rest. I did ask my supplier, SoEnergy, who I find very fair, but have not had a reply - they probably felt it was obvious. I was thinking of asking if a Smart Meter was available but was concerned that the 'flow' may be wrong.

You can't really compare the bills of other people because there are far too many variables.Size of property, commuting or home all day, insulation, temperate or tropical, still on old cheap fixed tariff, the list is almost endless.0

This meter reads in cu ft. The current reading is 514881 cu ft - or 5148.81 hundred cu ft. Your supplier is only interested in how many hundreds you have used and as long as you only give them the 4 big numbers you will be billed correctly.0
