    Hi tigerfeet,
It's not very often I query your posts, in fact this is probably the first,  but what sort of holiday can you enjoy for £240?:D :D Even for one person, that's not going to rent a caravan in Cleethorpes for a long weekend, and it would be a very long weekend.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
You can have a good holiday for £240, but you have to be proactive & creative about getting it.
    • I've got a holiday in Milan coming up that cost me under £10 in the Ryanair giveaways earlier this year.
    • I've put myself on the list at work of people prepared to house-sit for someone while they're on hols - I'm past caring about how far away I go or how hot it is when I get there, I just want a break somewhere different, & so far I've had 6 people contact me. I've heard there are agencies you can register with to do the same thing.
    • There are people who go into hospital but don't have anyone to look after their pets - you'd have to register with an agency or go through some sort of local government/health vetting, but once you've been through that....
    • It's not how long you go away for that matters, but the quality of the break you have while you're away, & who you share it with if you're going as a group/family/couple. If you're prepared to be flexible about your dates, go at short notice & only go for a few days mid-week in mid-low season, you could squeeze in a couple of breaks overseas in a year.
My take on the money you're allowed to put aside for a holiday is that it's not meant to cover all the costs the holiday will incur. It's meant to go towards you getting a break of some kind during the course of the year. Go expensive, & you'll get a couple of nights in a London hotel for £240 or an overnight stay in a 5* foreign one. But be creative about it & accept that the closest you'll come to your idea of a "luxury break" is reading the words in the dictionary, & you'll find you can make a very good break out of very little. Everywhere has its good points, it's just that when we're BR we have to look a bit harder to find them. :D

    Hi wdiag,

I never query your posts either because you do post some good solid advice, and that one was no exception.

I would just like to point out though, that you're referring to a "working holiday" and one that is wholly inappropriate for a couple with children.

I need absolutely no guidance on how to make my money go further with regard to holidays. We've had two weeks abroad this year and three last, and the five weeks have probably cost us less than the average family holiday for a fortnight, and there were six of us for one week last year.

Unfortunately, unless you live close to an airport, there's £65 in car parking for a week; cheap flights are fantastic until you see the tax and other charges applied £300 (family of four); accomodation even if it's somebody you know £100; car hire £100; food drink and entertainment £150. Add in Travel Insurance and you're looking at £750, or approximately £60 pcm.

I'm a realist, and an accountant, and life is expensive; £240 is nowhere near enough for an annual holiday.

    Richard
