Jobcentre appointments

I am currently unemployed but attend college and as part of the course I volunteer at a school (I need to work in a school to pass my course)
I have explained to the job enter I can not attend an appointment as I am working at the school and asked to change the day. This was there response.
Unfortunately, not. The school is not paying you any wages. You cannot put volunteering ahead of attending mandatory jobcentre appointments.

is this right? I'm sure they could change the date. I thought they are supposed to support people finding work. My course finished in June this year which means I can apply for full time positions.

Are you a part of full time student, and what does your Claimant Commitment say?

Yes it is right, technically, they could change the appointment to suit, but what would you do if you got a job interview on the day you volunteered?

If you are unable to attend an appointment, they have to look at whether it's a good reason and they may deem that volunteering is not a good reason, but then if sent to a decision maker, they may as it's subjective.

Unless you are an eligible full time student in receipt of student income which is being taken into account and deducted from your UC award each month, or you are under 21, in full time education and with without parental support, you will be in the Intensive Work Search regime and are expected to give up your studies to be available for and to take up work. This includes attending appointments at the jobcentre whenever required. If you cannot demonstrate your availability for work by attending an appointment then you can expect to receive a sanction and should not be claiming UC. UC does not exist to support students, other than in a few pre-described circumstances.
