TV Boxes - alternatives to Manhattan.

Thanks all.
I guess hers must be the T2-R as I'm pretty sure it doesn't have WiFi, but I'll check. That also means it won't have had a software update, ever.
All things for me to check - really appreciate your comments, folks. Good chance she'll go for a T3, or even hold out for the 4.0 -

It does however have an ethernet connection which will enable you to connect to the Internet using an ethernet cable and get your software updates. The only problem is getting your router close enough to connect the cable while following update instructions on the tv.
Alternatively you could take it to your own house and do it there, or download the updates onto a USB stick via your pc and run the updates offline using the usb connection at the rear of the box. Best of luck.

I have the Youview box connected to the router with homeplug adapters.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?1 -
Thanks, Neil - yes, I was prepared to do the USB updating. We'll see if she simply upgrades the whole Manhattan first :-)

Still check with Manhattan, they may have an update that hasn't gone on general release. Their customer service team are really quick at answering messages.

Interesting point - I used a signal strength meter to check what's coming through the aerial cable, and it was hugely stronger than at my own house a couple of miles away.
Yes, there's an amp fitted, and I noticed it was turned up to max. I took a photo of the aerial, but don't have it to hand.
Westward Ho! relay under a mile. Vp aerial. 26 degrees.
Check the box is tuned to the correct HD frequency: 37 not 22 from the relay? That may be the problem? The relay is predicted as much stronger than the main transmitter. Both get in the amplifier, even though the aerial is wrong polarisation and not pointed directly at it it will pick up both.
Next: Turn that amplifier down as a test.
Even consider removing it and direct connect the aerial.
If not needed for other TV outlets it'd save some electricity (admittedly not a lot but...).

Thanks Rodders.
Found the signal strength in the menu - 100% for both strength and quality.
I guess there remains the possibility that the signal is too strong, and causing issues that way, but I need a stepladder to get into the loft, so wasn't able to check that.
Also tried a USB upgrade, but that didn't work for some reason. I unzipped the file, and put the two correct ones on a Fat disc, but it kept saying there were no suitable files on the stick. Hey-ho.
Anyhoo, hopefully nan will upgrade the box, so updates will be auto, and hopefully the recording signal issue will be sorted too. (It's seemingly only the recorded progs that break up, and often don't record to their ends).0 -
I have the Manhattan T3-R and find it excellent, as also their technical 'customer service' when contacted about about a problem I had with recordings being missed because "the power was off" - which it wasn't!Might I suggest you contact their technical support?PS Thanks to wongataa about the forthcoming T4-R...

Thanks JG.
Yes, I have found Manhattan good at responding, tho' so far they were only able to suggest the obvious stuff - signal strength and quality (both 100%).
Wife is over there at the mo, and will take the box back for a firmware update is nan wants to try this. Pretty sure she'll ultimately be opting for a new model, tho'.
May I ask about the T3-R, please? Being WiFi, does it have access to the various 'Players' - BBC, ITVX, Ch4 and 5? If so, how does this work - are they downloaded like Apps, or are they pre-installed? I'm assuming that the main TV menu is only 'Terrestrial', and there isn't an internet version of this - ie an aerial is still a requirement for the channel menu, recording, etc?
