Eon double billing

Not sure if this has happened to others but when eon next swapped my mum's gas meter over to a smart meter they failed to remove the old meter from the account. As the smart meter never worked despite 2 engineer visits, only estimates for gas have been used and they have been using estimates for 2 meters hence double billing. My mum is a pensioner and only when they wanted to massively increase her direct debit did I look into her account. After numerous emails and calls to Eon they now admit to double billing for the past 13 months. They have removed the bills from the removed meter and her account has gone from approx £700 in debt to £900 in credit but no apology. I wonder if this is a one off or a common error but suggest anyone with unusually high bills check their accounts if a smart meter has been installed recently.

    I would advise anyone who has a meter changed to check the first bill that arrives to ensure all the info has been correctly recorded.

    Mistakes do happen.

    Is the Smart meter working OK - is the bills say - Our Read or A ?

    Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    We have sent in readings as smart meter is still not working. Another engineer is due at the end of the month to try again to 'smartify' the meter. I would advise anyone with elderly parents who are not familiar with online billing to check their account and hope the energy firms have the technology to investigate an account where bills are doubling. It is unfortunate that it takes numerous emails and calls for a mistake to be identified.
