Keen to  know the outcome. Everyone is different, personally I'd hope he would reduce his cost (a fair bit) and I'd call it a day with him. I'd be happy to have a stab at doing it myself with some filler if not a mission critical room. Stuff like the knauf fill and finish mentioned above is good.

    Hi,
Just some feedback how it went on.

Quote: "when a ceiling is plastered it is perfectly normal to have parts that need to be filled before painting (which is normally the painters job as part of their prep work) "

So they've offered to come back and fill the hollow bits, and sand it down. We haven't arranged for a date yet, but should soon be done...

I'm a little bit unsure about this statement: "there will be some dust from the sanding but you could cover stuff rather than move it all". We'll probably try to cover everything, because we have a tiny house and 2 kids, so emptying one room is a lot of work and leaves the whole house in chaos. But we once had painters (for doors and frames) who also sanded the paint down first - that dust was everywhere, I think it took as at least 2 days to clean everything, wash everything etc.

    Best wishes,
    Andre

To keep the dust down, there are some fillers that can be finished with a damp sponge to save sanding.
