Condemned boiler

Hi

I have just purchased my first home, and had a engineer come look at my boiler, he has now condemned it,
The boiler is a myson apollo and is 25 years old.
Having looked at requirements to be able to get grants I don't receive any benefits that some require.

But is there any grants or subsidised grants I can apply for?

Thanks for any help

As you have been able to afford to buy your first home, you will not qualify for any help save for a £5000 grant if you replace your boiler with a heat pump. Sorry.

AFAIK all you can get is £5k towards a heatpump so do the sums and plenty of research as to whether it would be beneficial in the long run to go for a heatpump or just replace the boiler with another gas one.

There's a lot of stuff on t'interweb about heatpumps, those who are for and those who are against, so its a bit of a minefield and TBH there's no right answer.

There's no doubt that a heatpump will save energy and CO2 but that doesn't mean that one will save you money although they might in the future.

They cost a lot more to install (even with the £5k grant) and the running costs are probably on a par with gas at the moment providing you can get the system designed, set up and operated correctly.

What is the reason? Its not unheard off for a perfectly safe boiler to be condemned just to get the new install job, wasn't bg was it?

Or "parts no longer available!" When they are.

Were you made aware of the boilers age when you bought the property? The seller completes a TA6 form which in section 12 gives details of when the boiler was installed. Your solicitor should have provided you with a copy.

If you knew before purchase that it was 25 years old, you should really have expected it would need replacing.

I bet the new boiler won't last 25 years

I don’t see why not, and a new condensing boiler will be considerably cheaper to run than a 25 year old non condensing one.

An aluminium heat exchanger for a start compared to a cast iron heat exchanger in a 25 year old boiler. I could also single out the fan which failed in the first year when I bought a house with a new WB condensing boiler.

Condemned does not necessarily mean 'not repairable'

I have a 33 year old boiler which the plumber/heating engineer who services it every year says would have been condemned years ago by 'the gas board'. It has never broken down and is still giving good service.

Yup. If it has a pilot light, that will be burning through 1500-2000KWh of gas each year and a 65% efficiency rating. A new boiler will be running at 90-95% efficiency. It would be worth fitting new larger radiators so that you can run at a lower flow temperature.
Installing a heat pump will require much larger radiators to be fitted at the same time - It would also pay to look at the routing of the CH pipes and possibly swap some of them for larger ones.
