woooah hold on there for just a minute :)

What donnajunkie said is right except one thing which is "plug it into the modem".

If you're modem only has ONE possible network connection, then you need a box like a Netgear DG834GT where you can put more than one computer onto the internet at the same time I believe..
Oh Dear back to square one. Where do I get one from on the high street and how much please?

I am now confused again. This Netgear thing seems to be a wireless router but I do not have wireless internet.
  • ceewash, wireless internet isn't something your ISP (BT) would supply. They supply the internet connection, and you then can distribute that wirelessly.

You said you're with BT right? So what you'd do is buy the Netgear Wireless ADSL Router (The ADSL bit being very important as it means it has a modem in built). You'd stick in the cable to the phone line into the back of the router, and then the router would connect to the internet like a pc would.. do you see?

In other words, when you then connect wireless or using a wire to the router, the router is sharing its own internet connection with people that connect to it.

Let me put it another way. every computer has an address.. an IP Address (like a house address but for each computer on a network). Now currently, you connect to your BT Voyager to get internet access. So you have an internet IP Address.

What will happen is the router will connect and get an internet IP Address. When each comptuer connects to the router you get an INTERNAL ip address simply to talk to the router. In other words you can have your wireless network without an internet connection!!! If you really wanted :p

It is a wireless router but it has 4 wired Ethernet ports, and you would also have wireless capability should you need that in the future.
I think MK was suggesting Netgear as an example.
    Edit: Apologies crossed post.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Thak you very much. I feel you are coming from a different place as far as technical knowledge is concerned. I am off to the high street armed with all this new knowledge to see if I can get this sorted. Or I might just get him Monopoly instead.
  • No need to apologise for helping hehe :D

Ye the Netgear was an example as I have one personally. There are other ones on the market, like Belkin and Linksys :)

But when searching for one you need an ADSL Router... very important those 2 words are in the model :)

Out of interest, your current broadband connection, how does it plug in your pc.. with a USB or an RJ45 port? (google image them both for piccys)

if you dont need to have your pc online at the same time as you are playing online then what i said is correct. it is what i do and it works for me. all i do is unplug the ethernet cable that goes to the pc out of the modem and plug in the ethernet cable that comes from the console instead.
the instruction booklet has diagrams showing the different ways of connecting.

just to add. you only need to go down the router way of things if the tv you want to play on is nowhere near your modem. in my case the net is upstairs and the big tv is downstairs. so to play on that i would need a router. i dont do that though. i just play on the portable tv that is in the same room as the internet.

Just to update you all. I solved the problem with a wireless router. This took most of the christmas holiday to connect to aol but fimally managed it and xbox live is up and running. Now does anyone know how to extract an 14 year old boy from xbox live?
