Stored card details, will have allowed transaction to go through. Most likely utility co processed it as continuous payment authority, which does not require a CVV.

CVV is not a required filed for online payments.

Can I query eskbankers on his calculation
There are exactly 1000 three digit numbers between “000“ and “999“.
I have never had a cvv with the same three digits (007 but not 777). Do Visa et al omit some 3 digit numbers from being used?
I don't know the answer to that, but imagine that if there were any numbers that weren't used, definitive detail is unlikely to be made public!

RG2015: My poor desciption, sorry. The cvv is not a 3 digit number, rather an identifier that consists of 3 digits.

I wasn't influenced by your description rather that I suspected that 000 would not be used as a cvv.

That, and the age old argument on whether zero is or is not a number,  :)

Wow Band7 you have more cards than me. I have been reducing the number of my accounts recently. My tally just exceeds eskbankers` figure.

000 is not a valid 3 digit number so 999 is correct.
I do have one card with 000.

That's my only one with the same three numbers.

I stand corrected on 000 not being a number.

My only triple digit cvv is 666. And no surprise, it is Santander.

Not sure if I should be worried.  :)

I have now found the source of the error to be with the utility company or their outsourced payment organisation. The first time I use the debit card they check the card and cvv through the bank system. Subsequent use of the stored card appears not to check the cvv again and accept any cvv entered. The cvv is not checked even if the payment is to be approved using the app and so will be approved by RBS/NatWest.
I have tried the same scenario with a second utility company and payments to several credit cards and any wrongly input cvv causes the payment to fail either immediately or occasionally after approval in the app.
