Stored card details, will have allowed transaction to go through. Most likely utility co processed it as continuous payment authority, which does not require a CVV.
CVV is not a required filed for online payments.Life in the slow lane0 -

RG2015: My poor desciption, sorry. The cvv is not a 3 digit number, rather an identifier that consists of 3 digits.1

That, and the age old argument on whether zero is or is not a number,0 -

My only triple digit cvv is 666. And no surprise, it is Santander.
Not sure if I should be worried.0 -
I have now found the source of the error to be with the utility company or their outsourced payment organisation. The first time I use the debit card they check the card and cvv through the bank system. Subsequent use of the stored card appears not to check the cvv again and accept any cvv entered. The cvv is not checked even if the payment is to be approved using the app and so will be approved by RBS/NatWest.I have tried the same scenario with a second utility company and payments to several credit cards and any wrongly input cvv causes the payment to fail either immediately or occasionally after approval in the app.2
