Hello,
Apologies for the post. But I am super confused about the energy caps.

My understanding is for electric and gas there is a cap for standing charge and unit costs, and looking on MSE website for Gas unit price is 10.31p per kWh. Standing charge is 29.11 per day. Electric unit price is 33.21 per kWh. Standing charge is 52.97 per day.

But on my Shell account is says we are on Energy Price Guarantee 3 Direct Debit ebill. For Gas unit price is 10.23p per kWh, standing charge is 29.11 per day. Electric 32.810p per kWh and standing charge is 53.96p per day.

Am I right in thinking that Shell is over the cap on the standing charge for electric?

I'm looking to switch to another provider but price comparison says we're on the best rate!

Thanks,

Also if you mean with best rate the information from Shell, that only means their tariffs and does not compare to other suppliers.
It would not mean anything at the moent as all the SVT rates except for E7 are more or less identical.

I've looked and Octopus daily rate is lower than my current provider. And I get £50 from a refer a friend link.

I think I misunderstood the information. I thought there was a cap on the standing charge. but it's just the unit per kWh?

You haven't misunderstood - There is a cap for standing charge ( ie 0 kWh) and the unit price of gas and electricity.  There are 14 regions which each have a set of rates, and then there are also differing rates in each region according to the method of payment.

In a few weeks time Ofgem will publish a new set of caps for the period starting 1 July.  Tables of all the varying rates are normally posted in this forum.

Oh my gosh! 14 regions with different rates, how not to make it simple and straightforward!! LOL

We're on the Shell Energy Price Guarantee v3 Direct Debit.

Gas unit price is 10.23p per kWh, standing charge is 29.11 per day.
Electric 32.810p per kWh and standing charge is 53.96p per day.

    Octopus has quoted
Gas unit price is 10.24p per kWh, standing charge is 27.47 per day. Slightly more expensive on per kWh and cheaper on standing charge
Electric 32.810p per kWh and standing charge is 52.32p per day. Same kWh and slightly cheaper on standing charge.

I don't think the 0.01p will make much of a different, The standing charge is a saving of about £1 a month. But it's better than nothing. And we have a referral for £50 credit.

I think for now, we'll switch to Octopus and then go from there and see how it goes in July.
