If your friend is happy to pay that amount for the service they are receiving then they don't need to do anything. Is the friend part way through a contract with BT?Would it cost them to leave?Things that are different: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid1

Hi
It's a bit high I was paying 38 fo 1 gb and just moved to sky and get it for 25.00 month
He just what ap he is not in contract thus the charge is so high0 -
If he wants to move provider then he should see what is available and what suits his needs. He can speak to BT and see if they can offer a better deal.Things that are different: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid2

I struggle to understand why any normal domestic installation would require that speed.
I have umpteen devices connected and sharing bandwidth here and I have 72mpbs down and 20mbps up.....
Maybe just maybe people who game might need A BIT more, or to download HUUUUUGE games you may save a few seconds, otherwise absolutely unnecessary.Old enough to know better...........1 -
I agree with FindMyWayBack,Many, or even most, people are paying for wifi capacity (it isn't actually speed - it's capacity) that they will not be using.Calling it 'speed' is a marketing trick to make you think that you are getting a 'quicker' internet than you actually are.Even on a 1Gbps capacity line one person won't normally use it at anything above 20mbps, (and usually much less) but a lot of people could each use 20mbps all at the same time.
You see the difference between 'speed' and 'capacity'?You don't need a Ferrari, and actually a bus is more relevant, to get just yourself to the shops or the cinema.Or to put it another way:
A Ferrari will move 2-people-per-second, a bus will move 60-people-per-second.
Despite the bus having a higher number 'per-second' we all know which is the faster, but speeed isn't what the 'per-second' is meaning here, or when it comes to your broadband either. The moral is - Don't be fooled by misleading advertising into paying for more than you actually need.0 -
Just because 72 Mbps suits you it doesn't mean there aren't people with different uses for their internet that require 1 gig.FindMyWayBack said:I struggle to understand why any normal domestic installation would require that speed.

And it isn't just saving a few seconds - the popular game Call of Duty - 7 hrs to download on your broadband, just 30 mins on my 1 gig connection for example.
I recently left Virgin Media 1gig to switch to an altnet with 1gig up / down and when the retentions team called me they said they had never seen such high internet usage ever from my line peaked at 5.5TB last October - think they were secretly glad I was leaving.
Uploading backups as well - I have several TB of photos/home videos etc that I backup to cloud storage - it would take 2-3 weeks on your connection - just 6-8 hours on mine. Of course, I normally do smaller incremental backups of the changes, but it is good to do a full backup monthly which can run overnight.
I also run a VPN server so the family and I can get a fully private and secure connection anywhere away from the house that routes through my broadband - on your connection that would limit it to just 1 mobile phone getting 20mbps (upload is download to mobile) wasting the 500-600 Mbps available on 5G and choking the home internet. Oh and if you think you wouldn't want that, how about the benefit of adblocking it gives me for my mobile wherever I am by routing through my home firewall as well as the security benefits and of course it is free apart from the hardware.
Ok, I'm an extreme user, but whereas I can see how 72/20 suits your needs, you said you struggle to understand so I just wanted to show how 1000/1000 suits other people - and maybe even more, my home network is mostly 2.5Gbit ethernet some I'm ready for the next level of speed when it comes.
Oh and I currently pay £22.50 a month for my broadband.
The misleading part about ISP advertising is things like "superfast fibre broadband" delivering 24mbps on a partial fibre line. That's what everyone has been brainwashed into believing and it is totally wrong.Newcad said:The moral is - Don't be fooled by misleading advertising into paying for more than you actually need.
