Moving phones and Google SSO for TripAdvisor

My wife has a new mobile phone. while trying to log into TripAdvisor and DropBox on the new phone using Google SSO she got a message saying that it had sent a code to the gmail app on iphone. She couldn't see any emails in gmail and she was thoroughly confused. I guessed that it wasn't actually an email and she needed to get the code from the gmail app on her old phone. I have resolved the immediate issue, but she is concerned that she is getting rid of the old iphone and may be unable to log into various apps without it.
I don't really understand what it is doing so I can't really be confident that there is no continuing dependency on the old iphone. I have Googled for an explanation, but not found anything useful. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Just sign into the same Google account on the new phone as you did the old one and the Gmail should appear on its own.

Just an aside, it is much better to use the full site for TripAdvisor. The app is .... not good and doesn't show all that is available and is prone to having histerical fits leading to one of your own!
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well
