Tax refund

Options
My wife and I had our PPI claim upheld on our joint mortgage. We receive separate letters from the bank detailing the tax paid. the letter show the same amount of tax deducted. We want now to claim a tax refund. I can't find any guidance on whether the tax paid quoted is the total amount of tax paid by both of or if the tax paid is individual. in other words, do we both claim or just on of us can? I have tried to contact HMRC to ask this question, but I can't get through! Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Which tax year was the PPI refund/statutory interest paid out to you?

Do you mean you received letters showing identical amounts in all respects?

Do you have details of what was actually paid into each person's bank account?

Did either of you complete a Self Assessment return for the tax year the statutory interest was paid in?

Hi Dazed_and_Confused, apologies for the late reply (been ill).

Which tax year was the PPI refund/statutory interest paid out to you? 2019

Do you mean you received letters showing identical amounts in all respects? Yes, two identical letters showing the same amounts (i.e. the total refund of PPI premiums, Compensatory interest, gross payment, tax deduction and total payment)

Do you have details of what was actually paid into each person's bank account? Yes, each of us was paid half of the total due in our joint account

Did either of you complete a Self Assessment return for the tax year the statutory interest was paid in? We didn't complete a Self Assessment return for 2019

The question I can't get an answer is: the tax deduction quoted is for both of us or each one of us had that ammount deducted? As I said the HMRC helpline is not putting through to a human being no matter what time of the day I try. The webchat is not available for tax queries! hope you can still help. Many thanks
