Can cost of unused travel insurance be recovered?

Options
We were due to sail to New York on the Queen Mary 2 on 23/04/23 but Cunard cancelled the crossing hours before sailing.  So our travel insurance policy (cost of £1,700) is worthless as we aren't going anywhere.  Does anyone know if there is any way of recovering the cost of the policy other than from Cunard?

Surely your travel insurance is going to cover the (excess) costs incurred?  Whilst Cunard are refunding you (and providing 20% FCC) they may not be paying for parking, flights, cost of returning home etc etc.  You have been covered by your insurance since you bought it - the fact that you might not want/have to claim is immaterial.

If it was a single trip policy it may be worth speaking to the insurer and asking about a partial refund.  As has been said, you would have had cover against you needing to cancel from the day you took the policy out so there certainly wouldn't be an entitlement to a full refund.  If they don't refund the next step would be to try to claim from Cunard.

Do you have legal cover on your home insurance? I assume there would be a legal helpline you could consult.
Also, if your insurer won't refund, it may be worth asking of it can be transferred to a future cruise, assuming that you will want to book another cruise?
  • Thanks for your comments. I had just reached the same conclusion re requesting a partial refund. I realise I have been covered since buying the policy but the major part of the cost of the policy is due to the fact we were cruising and visiting the US and so the insurance company was never posed to this risk as we never went. I found a very similar situation cited as a case study on the Financial Ombudsman and in that case the FO instructed the insurers to refund the part of the policy that was cruise related so I will try again with the insurers.

  • Thank you for replying. No future cruises for us! 😀

  • Thanks for your response. I intended to reply directly but my response came through as a new post. I'm new to the forum so figuring out how to use it still.
