I know this would not go down with a lot of people but it would be better if the airlines charged a bit more for the seats and included hold luggage in the cost.
No it wouldn’t go down well as people don’t want to cross subsidise others, especially at the very price sensitive end of budget airlines.

if the policy is clear then it’s 100% the consumers fault for not complying.

I’m sorry but I agree with some of the other comments. I actually do take hold luggage as I like a choice of fresh clean clothes and don’t want to start having to rinse things through in a basin if I’m away for any length of time. However, with pricing separately I have the choice of how many bags and even what weight.

We did a week in the Canaries with a 23kg case, I took my own towels and also some dressy clothes for the evening . However a few days later we went on a 5 day break to Palma and only paid for 15kg . If our fares had incorporated luggage I would have lost out as we took one case between 2 of us and with weight appropriate to the things we needed to take.

No thanks. As someone who can travel for a month with a small carry on I'd rather not be forced to pay extra because some people can't or won't follow simple instructions nor to subsidise folk who feel a need to bring 50kg of luggage for a weekend away.

If you are skinny then like it not, aware or not, you are already subsidising those that are larger.

Be an intelligent customer, know what you want and what you are getting.

Small, medium and large bags means nothing they are comparative and subjective, know what bag size and weight is allowed as these will be quoted and are fixed.

Self loading baggage ie customers, reduces costs for baggage handlers and may be passed on but there is finite space in the cabin and the cost of loading the baggage needs to be recovered if the is overspill.

On some BA flights it is cheaper to upgrade to club than pay extra baggage costs.

Bear in mind the tax often exceeds the ticket cost so is it really about the cost or the fear that others may be getting more of the benefit than you?

It was ever thus - certain nationalities carry way more than the major airlines say but because the airport is larger, satff more they are taken aside and minimal interference.
Budget is just that. Rules are clear but too many think it doesn't apply to them or its not really going to be checked. Obviously too many believe they are the only ones to have thought of 'just having a bit over'
    Nope. No sympathy from me.
What shouldn't happen is that they hold up the people who abide by the rules.

I'd be all for sending them to the back of the line (like I used to do with nursery kids) because that's how they're behaving.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

    Completely agreed here.

Unless Priority is about £5 we will typically make backpacks last a few weeks. OH has a bag that will squeeze down to go into the sizer, which is fine until it does get checked and it will go in but won't come out again ;).

This is the fault of the consumer. Ryanair flights are generally sold below cost, therefore there are extras. It's necessary to either adapt or to make the airline a profit and just because you get away with chancing something once doesn't mean you will again. The charges are clearly shown in advance and therefore are not unfair.

Not unfair? I really think that once you need to pay extra to use the overhead locker something has gone wrong.

I often need to travel with my laptop computer, which exceeds the bag size allowed by Ryanair. On a recent journey the extra fee to take my laptop was more than twice as much as the ticket for myself. I do not feel this practice is fair, but of course it is legal and there is nothing I can do about it.

Unless the flight is very full you can still use the overhead locker with your small bag. I usually do it as hate having things under the seat.

You must have a hell of a large laptop to carry on flights if it won't fit in a small carry on. But I don't feel it's unfair that if you want to bring a big item you pay a bit more. I don't feel like the amount charged for luggage is reasonable to be honest but that's why I always avoid it whenever possible. I object to paying more than the value of the contents of the bag to fly the bags there and back! But that doesn't make it 'unfair' - as a consumer I have a choice.

In a strange way I've actually found the bag restrictions helpful when I travel sometimes as it's forced me to really pare down anything I carry and made travelling a lot easier with less stuff to lug around. Plus in an emergency I can always buy anything i need at the destination with the money I've saved not carrying a bag on the plane.

Yes but SOME people want to fly for pennies BUT want to carry as much as they can get away with rather than pay for the bags/cases they have.We tend to fly with Jet2 a lot and it always suprises me what some people call carry on lugage but until all the airlines make a stand on standardisation thid problem will happen time and time again.

Why should airlines standardise? It's a commercial environment and they are all vying for the edge, if the consumer is not smart then they will pay up that's not the airline operator's problem.
