How can I record on DVD recorder properly?

We have a Toshiba RD X524 dvd recorder - one with a hard drive. I would like to be able to record programes without having to have the telly switched on with the sound down on the channel we are recording at the same time  Is this possible, I am sure and hope it is, I just don't know how to do this. It would be great to record programmes whilst watching others and with the tv switched off (just like in the olden days when we had a vcr!).

Can anyone help? We don't have any sky boxes or separate freeview boxes just freeview which is already part of the TV (also a Toshiba).

thankyou!

The simplest and easiest way out of your problem is to buy a separate digibox for use by the DVD recorder only. Boxes are cheap enough now (around £20). Buy an aerial splitter device, feed one output to the TV and the other output to the new digibox, a separate scart lead from the digibox to the DVD recorder and you are ready to go. Saves all the hassle of switching or messing with AV1 or AV2. Good luck.
