Carers and Savings

Hello,

My wife claims carers for our eldest son. If we managed to get some savings together would this affect the Carers she receives? We have never managed to get much money put aside, but lately we are trying to pay off any debts and only now have a Mortgage remaining. I was hoping to get some money into savings accounts but I was told that if you have savings over £6000 then the carers would be affected? I read that my wife's carers is not means tested and it doesn't matter how much savings you have? Some advice would be appreciated as I'm confused.

Thanks

It does not matter how much savings you have. Carers allowance is not means tested.

I’m a carer and have a bit more than 6k, no effect on carers allowance.
But I can’t claim UC or whatever it’s is, as savings are to high.

The absolute savings threshold for UC is £16,000.  Someone's entitlement with savings below that but above £6,000 would depend on their maximum UC and any deductions for other benefits, earnings, etc.

For others reading this, please note that the maximum savings threshold for claiming UC is £16k not £6k as implied by this post.
