Gaming Laptop vs PC advice

Hi

I'm looking to get my son sorted with a gaming laptop or PC. He would ideally like PC but I am thinking a laptop may be better as he could use it more easily for schoolwork as well?

Though I am not a tech idiot I am not a gamer and I would take any advice that could help me to find out if my idea is workable.

Are gaming laptops good enough? Would he be able to use this for schoolwork?

If a laptop is possible then what is a realistic budget? And any suggestions on ones that may be suitable for a good level of gaming?

And probably a 100 other questions that I haven't yet thought of!

Thanks in advance.

Gaming laptops do exist but you can usually get a better bang for buck from a desktop.

Plus you can upgrade the desktop further down the line.  The laptop will be stuck with whatever it comes with for the rest of its life.  The desktop you can just shove a new graphics card (and maybe beefier power supply) in it further down the line, and later swap out the board/memory/processor to keep the case.

    This might be of interst:

Anything you buy will cope with "schoolwork", you don't need anything meaty just to type an essay in response to "What I did in the holidays" into a Word document :)

PC. You can buy a second hand laptop if he needs to take something to school.

Go down the gaming PC route, they are much better value for money and they are upgradable. What kind of games is he looking to play?

A PC can have sensible cooling, a laptop has everything jammed together so the cooling will always be compromised.

He can do his schoolwork on a PC as well.  If he needs something to carry around to do his schoolwork in school (schoolkids must be massively more respectful of other people's property than in the 1980s when I was at school) then get a basic chromebook for that.
